St. Peregrine Laziosi may not be the most well known saint
the Catholic Church has ever canonized, but he certainly is patron
saint to a large group of people - whether you realize it or not.
That's because he's seen as a protector of those who suffer with
cancer, HIV or any other serious life-threatening or chronic illness.
To many Catholics, this means that they can pray to this figure
- who himself had suffered with cancer - with the faith that he
may intercede for them and provide a miraculous healing.
St. Peregrine stood the vast majority of 30 years as a self-imposed
penance for slapping the individual who was to become St. Philip.
Not only did this cause him to develop varicose veins, but it's
said that he also acquired cancer in his foot because of it.
On the even of his amputation operation, St. Peregrine Laziosi
dragged himself to the foot of a crucifix where he spent the night
in prayer. During this time, he entered a trance-like state, in
which he had a vision of Christ touching his diseased foot. Upon
exiting the trance, he realized his foot was healed - completely.
Catholics now pray to this saint with the faith of receiving
a healing themselves and to comfortthem in their - or their loved
ones - darkest hours. Prayer itself is an act of faith in which
you speak to the divine. While many types of prayers exist, depending
on the purpose of your intended conversation, those who pray to
St. Peregrine Laziosi, usually use what's called intercessory
prayer.
This is the form of prayer used when you're requesting a petition
be met - as in being healed from a chronic disease like cancer.
Another form of prayer is that of thanksgiving - most often used
those who have received an answer to their prayers.
Many other forms of prayer exist - and you've no doubt used these
all through the years - including worshipping God, asking for
either guidance or assistance in certain circumstances, confession
of sins or to make amends for past mistakes or sins. And then
sometimes we pray simply to express our thoughts and our emotions
to God.
The following prayer is just one of many available to you to
pray to St. Peregrine Laziosi to request his aid in helping to
heal you from you cancer or chronic disease.
St. Peregrine Prayer
GLORIOUS WONDER-WORKER, St. Peregrine,
You answered the divine call
With a ready spirit,
And forsook all the comforts of the world
To dedicate yourself to God
In the Order of His Most Holy Mother.
You labored manfully
For the salvation of souls;
And in union with Jesus Crucified
You endured the most painful sufferings
With such patience
As to deserve to be
Healed miraculously
Of an incurable cancer
In your leg by a touch
Of his divine hand.
Obtain for me
The grace to answer
Every call of God
And to fulfill His Will
In all the events of life.
Enkindle in my heart
A consuming zeal
For the salvation of souls;
Deliver me from the infirmities
that afflict my body
(name your petition)
Obtain for me
Perfect resignation to the sufferings
It may please God to send me,
So that, imitating our Crucified Savior
And His Sorrowful Mother,
I may merit eternal glory in heaven.
Amen.
St. Peregrine, pray for me
And for all who invoke your aid. (3 times)
Saint Peregrine Prayer for people with cancer
O great St. Peregrine, you have been called "The Mighty,"
"The Wonder-Worker," because of the numerous miracles
which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse
to you.
For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease
that destroys the very fibre of our being, and who had recourse
to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more.
You were favoured with the vision of Jesus coming down from His
Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure
of the sick whom we entrust to you.
(Pause here and silently recall the names of the sick for whom
you are praying)
Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing
to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His
great goodness and mercy.
Amen.

the Mother of God for his Teacher, and Jesus as the Physician
of his malady, grant we beseech You through his merits that we

Mary, and our Saviour, and in Him bless them forever. Grant that
